Rebuilding a machine, major pain.

Rebuilding a machine or reloading the operating system is a major pain. I thought I'd detail a few things I did in my latest rebuild. There's a few helpful tips along with a few helpful programs. Check it out.

First and foremost you'll want to back up all of your personal documents. I have an additional hard drive that I use for this but you may have to back up on a DVD or multiple CD's. I won't go into great detail on all of the things I backed up but I can tell you a few things that are commonly overlooked.

There is a must-have utility called SIW by Gabriel Topala that will scan your system and get some crazy info for you. For instance, I was able to get ALL of my product keys / serial numbers for all programs. It gave me the username and passwords for all of my chat clients (I always forget those) and much more. I was able to create a report .html file with all of this key information. It's a small 1MB download and an invaluable tool to have, get it. Here is the process I went through after I reinstalled XP.
  1. Drivers -

Dell sends a Driver utility disk, I was able to put that in and instantly get updated driver for mostly everything. The basics include Video Card drivers, NIC drivers, etc.

  2. Microsoft Updates -

Definitely do this first thing before you do anything online. Chances are your machine is bugging you to do this straight away, don't miss this step. This includes all security patches, service packs if needed.

  3. External Firewire Drive -

Since I backed up everything on a firewire drive, I had to install the drivers for this so I could retrieve all of the data I backed up earlier.

  4. Firefox -

One of the first pieces of software I install is Firefox. It's the best browser period. I detail the firefox extensions later.

  5. Microsoft Office -

Getting my email back up and running is key to my survival so I make this a top priority. Again, this article should help you get your outlook data file restored.

  6. Trillian -

For me, a chat client is another key to my (business) survival so I get that right away. Trillian from Cerulean studios is the best choice for me because it's (free and) let's you use AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and IRC all within one client.

  7. Dreamweaver 8 -

If I didn't have Dreamweaver 8 I wouldn't be in business. Well I could use notepad but nobody would hire me :-). Again, see this article if you need to restore your site definitions.

  8. SQL Server 2000 -

Another business tool, I couldn't operate without it.

  9. Adobe Photoshop CS2 -

Again this is a business tool, I just wouldn't have a job without it, period. Gimp is a free alternative if you want a free but solid graphics program. This is also where I restore all of my plugins and actions.

  10. Adobe Lightroom -

This is what I'm using right now to manage my photos, although I'm starting to get tired of it.

  11. Microsoft Office -

Getting my email back up and running is key to my survival so I make this a top priority. Again, this article should help you get your outlook data file restored.

  12. Quicken 2007 Home / Business -

Cheddar management, gotta have this. This is also where I restore my .qif file I saved earlier, this is a seamless process.

  13. SQL Server 2000 -

I love me some joost, see here for details.

  14. iTunes -

I have to have podcasts and tunes. This is just not an option for me, I have to have it.

  15. FireFox Extensions -

Firefox extensions make life easier, here are a few of the must have extensions. I won't explain them, just follow the link for details.

So that's it. Hopefully you picked up a tip or a helpful program along the way!

Nice list there Jyo. I haven't tried Trillian, but it looks interesting. I currently use Adium on my iBook. Are you familiar with that? Also, for Firefox addons, I definitely get a lot of use out of FoxyTunes and Greasemonkey. I used the LinkedIn.com extension.

yeah I actually use Adium... I was a little thrown off by the quacks at firs but now I think it's cute.... Plus when you're away or idle the little icon has it's eyes shut. Very nice details aside from the fact that it's a solid, solid client.

Also, pretty funny... If I had to write a post about what to do to rebuild a mac, it'd be about a tenth of what this post was.

"insert CD, wait, then play"

I didn't like it at first, but now that I have it all customized to my liking I love it.
