New Gear (for Sarah)

05.14.2007     Comments     Related
Yep, that's right. Sarah is learning to shoot! We snagged the Canon Rebel XTi and she's working her way through the same book that taught me how to shoot; Understanding Exposure

We also snagged a Canon 50mm f1.8 which is a KILLER lens to add to your bag for just under $100. Throw that piece of trash 18-55mm kit lens out the window and get you some f1.8 love.

Yesterday we spent all day at the Zoo shooting and the day before we shot for hours (till our feet hurt) at the Botanical Gardens. She's got a great eye and has already grasped the technical side of shooting. She's already produced some some pretty rocking exposures.

I am on cloud nine right now, here is Sarah with her new cam.... although... I managed to get distracted by her beauty and didn't get the camera in the frame, doh! More to come.

New Canon for Sarah!

That's great that you guys are into the same things. When is her blog going to be up and running =]

I can't wait to get myself a nice camera. Any suggestions on a good place to find a decent camera for a good deal?

P.S. - The new background looks awesome. It contrasts great with the rest of the site.

Have a great day!

Thanks bro!

For camera suggestions, I've purchased at a brick and mortar store and I've bought online, my preference is to shop at your local camera store. You'll pay more but will be glad when (when, not if) you have issues with your camera you can take it in and talk to a real human. That right there is worth the extra $100.

Yay! Go Sarah! I'm looking into making the leap from film to digital...Canon Rebel XTi...good choice for weddings, studio settings, etc...? Any suggestions with a $1200 budget?
jyoseph - 05.14.2007
I'd say the XTi is a great choice within that budget. I think you can even get the 30d below that now. Personally I'd go with the XTi and get a better lens than the 18-55.

WHY A 50MM? I JUST BOUGHT MY XTI KIT AND I WILL EVENTUALLY GET A BETTE RLENS, BUT IS THERE ANY REASON IN PARTICULAR TO USE A 50MM OVE THE 18-55?

A response to a comment posted by MIKE (#):
Mike, that's actually a great question and you're the first to ask. Let me break down a few reasons why the 50mm totally kicks butt.

1. - Faster in low light. The f 1.8 aperture gives you a considerable advantage over the f3.5-5.6 aperture on the 18-55.
2. - Super sharp even at 1.8 - I've seen reports that this lens can produce sharper images than the 24-70mm L f/2.8 (which I also have) and that is a $1400 lens.
3. - Bokeh is wicked - it produces beautiful blurring of background in portraits.
4. - CHEAP! - You get all of that for under $100

The drawback to this lens is it's cheaply made and feels like a toy. But to me it has the same feel cosmetically than the 18-55. Trust me this is a lens you should have in your bag. Sarah my wife knocks them out of the park with this cheap little lens.

Hope that helps!
