Bisphenol A in baby bottles?

03.19.2008     Comments     Related
Imagine my surprise when after only 5 minutes of browsing the net I found the baby bottles we bought contained Bisphenol A (BPA). There are two schools of thought when it comes to BPA, 1) It's totally safe 2) It's totally toxic.

The bottom line for me: If studies even hint at the idea that BPA in low doses may cause problems during such a critical stage in a child's MY CHILD'S development, why use it? Err on the side of caution and use non-BPA baby bottles from a company like Born Free. That's an easy choice for me, real easy.

But instead of arguing either side, I'll just post my findings (with links to the sources) and leave it as that.

It's totally safe

  1. New Data from CDC Confirms Human Exposure to Bisphenol A in the United States is Far Below Safe Limits [source]
  2. The company philips / AVENT who manufactured the baby bottles that I'll be taking back to the store tomorrow, which contains BPA [source, You have to click on Q&A link at the bottom]
  3. Bisphenol is safe in low doses - [source]

It's totally toxic

  1. "... credible evidence that the chemical is harmful to every type of animal that has been studied, and this chemical is thus very likely to produce the same types of abnormalities in humans..." [source]

As I said before I'm not too concerned either way, I will err on the side of caution. I'm taking my BPA bottles back to the store for the less toxic type.
