DIY Ghetto Gel Light

02.20.2007     Comments     Related
Time for a ghetto tutorial. Using a CD jewel case we'll make a nice gel light.
This is an older tutorial that I posted quite awhile ago. I apologize for just ripping it down like that. Having said that, let's get on with it.
I was desperate for a color light tonight. I didn't have one and I was too lazy to go to the store (it's like 1:00am on top of me being lazy). So what to do, what to do. I'm sure you have a color jewel case or two laying around?
Color Cd's Take it apart and tape a few together like so. Tape it Then set it up like so. Voila Then take a photo like so. Voila

Did your mother not teach you anything.
Do NOT use the term ghetto unless you're trying to refer to a high density, impovershed section of a city inhabited primarily by people of the same race, religion, or social background, often because of discrimination.
It shows your class and race, which, lets be honest, is unbecoming of you.

If you were truly trying to make a point, try not starting your argument with with “did your mother not teach you anything”. You’ll find that the point your trying to make will be better received.

Lastly, when you come to my site, you should lighten up, or don’t come at all. Thanks in advance.

“4. (adj.) jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components), yet still deserving of an odd sense of respect from ghetto dwellers and non-ghetto dwellers alike”

I alaways use the word "Ghetto blaster" for huge stereo unit, is it bad ?

More seriusly, thanks for your Diy section !!

According to the previous commenter that is bad, but on my site it's perfectly legal and there will be no politically correct policeman/policewoman to tell you otherwise!

Glad you found the tutorials useful! I'd like to do some more if I ever get a break!

Is that first chic for real? Oh my goodness. What a trip.

Oh wait, am I only allowed to use the word "trip" if I'm referring to "a journey, voyage, or run made by a boat, train, bus, or the like, between two points"?

Your DIY Gel Light is fabulous. In fact, it's Ghetto-Fabulous!

That's probably the best comment I have received on my site to date (the one you left). To-tal-ly classic. Just . . . wow.

Thanks for coming by!! (please, stop by whenever!!)

LoL what a "trip" that chick is...

(*trip* as in a reaction usualy due to using drugs, while being in a high density, impovershed section of a city inhabited primarily by people of the same race, religion, or social background)

I jury-rig alot of things, and i am from the ghetto, also jewish, Not sure where your from lady but those are perfectly legal and accepted in the world today. If you were somehow offended by anybody saying perfectly legal and acceptable to society, then whats the issue?

Go fight the war against crime, drugs, music piracy... You need to shoot higher since you obvious are of higher class. Taking time out of your life to correct "slang" on a blog on the internet.

BTW, the "DIY Ghetto Gel Light" rocks, thanx for the ideas. Surprised to find that i already have alot of those cases laying around.

Ghetto + DIY = The future inventions for the average joe...

This could work quite nicely on an off camera flash too. The only thing I would suggest is increasing the power a full stop because of the thickness of the plastic.
Great idea, thanks for some fantastic tutorials.

Great idea! Can't think of a better name for it.
Good site, I'm glad I found it!
Keep up the good work!

Excellent idea!!! I love your other projects too...the Ghetto Gels are great, the Hood-Rat Light Ring is excellent and the Pimpin Mo-Fo light box is also great! Keep up the excellent work bro!...and don't take things too seriously...if you wanna call it a "poor mans flash" do so. If you want to call it a "Ghetto Gel", do so.

Great Work man, I love your ideas, being an Avid photographer myself and on a very Low Budget, Most of my Rigs are DIY as well, I'm making some of yours soon, and will be posting ideas

For colored Gels, I simply buy a few Transparent Printing papers, and print a full red, or blue or whatever color that tickles my creative sense, and clamp it infront of my light source, just keep an eye on them or they might melt or catch a fire.

Keep it up man, and use whatever terms you like, it's your site after all

great idea! us peoplez from da ghetto tend to be very resourceful, able to make things work from what we have at hand rather than jumping on the 'net and throwing down some plastic because we can't think up new ways to do things. where I come from, saying it's ghetto means it may not be pretty but damn it works!

therefore I say, hats off to thee for the ghettolicious gels.

NICE! Thanks Mia! :-)

First I want to say I love your site I came across it yesterday but only got a chance to really read up on a few things today. And BTW I agree with everybody else...some people need to get out of the dark ages and realize that it won't matter what is being said about anything, tomorrow...KWIM...? I am of Caribbean descent and take offence to her outrageous comments. For one our ancestors fought for freedom and freedom of speech to OUR RACE and your saying he has no right to say the word ghetto..? HA! what planet do you live on girl! The word Ghetto is Italian descent..get an education.

You have a fantastic site! Your tuts are awsome...you are definitely book marked in my fav's :)
