SASUKE - Ninja Warrior

Ninja warrior is a Japanese sports entertainment television special that airs on the Tokyo Broadcasting System and is now available on G4 TechTV. It's been 10 years since the first episode. Why I only discovered it last week is a mystery to me. I love it I love it.

Sasuke consists of four stages the competitors must complete. The thing that makes this show really interesting is the participants. Most of them are amateur athletes from Japan and even American gymnists (and olympic medalists) the Hamm Brothers. The stages increase in difficulty, and all but the 3rd Stage have a time limit.

My favorite is Makoto Nagano - a 35 year old fisherman who spends 300 days a year at sea. He is only the 2nd man (out of 2000 contestants over the past 10 years) to complete all stages of the competition.

Another favorite is Shingo Yamamoto - a 32-year-old gas station manager from Tokyo, he is the only person to have competed in every Sasuke competition, and the only person to attempt the first and second version of the Final Stage. He competes wearing his gas station work uniform.

I have an answer for your question even though I think your question was rhetorical. Here is my answer: TV (and ratings) in our country are driven by drugs, nudity, reality drama, shame, promiscuity, murder, etc.

You don't get any of that in ninja warrior. You do get athleticism, honor, respect, courage and discipline. I enjoy those things plus I admire the Japanese culture for displaying those traits aside from the show.

Thanks for the comment, cheers!

Every Saturday, I spend most of mid morning thru afternoon watchning Ninja Warrior...Love this show! My wife though is not too happy, as we do not get to do things together on our couple days a week off....maybe if I build an obstacle course in my backyard we can enjoy together.
